Young people with secret powers is hardly a novel subject for 21st century cinema. One thing that distinguishes Push from other such films is that it is not based on a book or a series of comic books.

As the product of an original screenplay, Push lacks the built-in recognition and expectations. But the film hardly seems to appreciate or exploit such freedom. Watching it, you’ll be convinced that it must be adapted from some piece of teen fiction, for it bears all the signs — a complex universe with extensive mythology, characters of gray with hinted-at histories, and the type of conflict that seems to change with every chapter-ending twist and lend itself to sequels.

In the world of Push, certain otherwise ordinary people have special psychic gifts that fall into different classes. Watchers can see into the future and act to change it. Movers are able to dabble in telekinesis. Pushers can enter others’ minds and insert ideas and false memories. Sniffers can track down people on the slightest trace of scent. Craig Robinson, Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville, and Camilla Belle have all joined the cast of Kevin Spacey’s upcoming ensemble comedy, Father of Invention.

The flick, which is being indepentally produced by Spacey, follows an inventor / billionaire (Spacey) who spends eight years in prison after one of his inventions goes wrong. When he’s released, the inventor seeks to rebuild his reputation and fortune, but finds that’s harder than fixing his relationship with his family.

Craig Robinson will play the new husband of the former billionaire’s ex-wife. Robinson is now living is his home and driving his car, yet helps the man get back on his feet. Belle will play his daughter, a social worker that’s hesitant to get close to her father again, while Graham will play her lesbian roommate. Knoxvile will play a store manager that first hires the ex-convict. Production begins this week in New Orleans.

Camilla Belle says Robert Pattinson is just a friend and hints at a deeper relationship with Joe Jonas. The 22-year-old 10,000 BC star was explaining her recent night out with Robert Pattinson and his Remember Me co-star Emilie De Ravin, at the Bowery Hotel in Manhattan on Tuesday, June 16. “We have a big group of friends and we saw each other last night,” Belle told People on Wednesday at The Whitney Contemporaries’ Art Party sponsored by BCBG Max Azria. Pattinson “is very cool – a very nice guy,” she added.

Pattinson and Belle have hung out together earlier on many occasions. They were spotted together on at least a couple of occasions in November, 2008. Quizzed on her recent romantic lunch out earlier this month with rumored boyfriend Joe Jonas, Belle played coy. “That, I won’t comment on,” she says emphatically.
